About Uzume
I have many wonderful memories of myself playing at my mothers feet in a crumpled mountain of colourful fabric swatches. Subtle sounds sprinkle my memory banks such as the creak of the scissors slicing through fabric, the gurgle & hiss of the iron, the awakening whirr of the overlocker & the delicate pierce & pull of the needle & thread as she worked by hand. This gift & passion of mine is as much innate as it is learned.

Uzume Kidswear birthed itself amongst floods of inspiration received by my little girl. By integrating valuable experience received from many years working in the local & international clothing industry, & a desire to create a product that reflects the beauty & vibrancy of the laughing world of the child in an ethical work environment, Uzume evolved.

All items from the Uzume label are produced locally & in the making supports craft development. Supporting & initiating projects to benefit the local communities, the product is made with love & enjoyment. The addition of a craft element accentuates the beauty & individuality of each garment. In the African Gypsy range, age-old customs of embroidery & applique are combined & infused with contemporary trends. Traditional techniques are embraced, revamped & transformed with modern creativity.

I believe that a considerate & ethical approach adds an authenticity to the label. The attention to detail & artisan finishes translate into designs that reflect beauty & cultural vibrancy.
